Hi, I am a 22 year old male living in Mauritius and here is my story.
2 years ago, I started to go to the gym. However, due to a lack of coaching and supervision, I have done some exercise wrongly (leg raise and rowing). Some days after, I felt a horrible pain in my lower back. Soon I could not even stand up for more than 5 minutes.
Unfortunately, I stopped all training hoping that this will help me in recovering from this pain. But I was long way from being cured. The pain was still there, day and night, and I had to live with it. Unluckily, I was getting more and more obsessed and there was nothing I could do about it.
One year, I was employed in a company where I was offered insurance. I decided that it was my only chance to know what happened to my lower back and it was time to eliminate the disease once for all. So I went to the hospital and asked for an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. He examined me and advised me that this was due to a wrong movements being executed and weight lifting, as well. He advised that this was lumbar disc disease.
However, my question was "Is there any treatment to this disease". He said yes, because I was not yet in the stage where I had pain in my legs. He gave me some anti-inflammatory drugs and booked me an appointment with the physiotherapist.
I went to see the physiotherapist and she said that this is 50:50. I can either be free from it or shall live with it for my whole life. Then the sequence of physiotherapy exercise started and she explained that this has to be done at least 30 minutes per day to strengthen the muscles in my lower back so that the disc can get back in place.
I followed her advice and did the sequence every day. Not to mention that I was doing my cardio (rope jumping, running) and other exercises with my dumbbells almost everyday even with my lower back pain.
After 4 months, I notice that this pain was getting worst than before. Every night I started to feel tremendous pain on my tail bone and had problems sleeping on my lower back. I thought that this problem could be with my mattress, as it was an old one. I decided to change it to an orthopedic one.
Soon I realized that my bed had nothing to do with it and that the problem surely comes from the way I train. So 1 week ago I went to see my orthopedic surgeon, but he was not there and I was forced to see another one. I accepted it, as there was no option left for me.
After hearing 5 minutes of my story, he advised that an MRI would really be helpful to understand my situation and he also advised me not to do any exercise apart from walking or swimming. Immediately I went for the MRI and got back to him as soon as possible.
After looking at my MRI, he said that there is no problem with the coccyx, the pain was due to 2 discs pressing on the spinal nerve. He prescribed me some drugs and warned me not to lift heavy objects and to avoid bending the spine, and he sent me back home with no other information.
Can you please help me to understand my situation and sincerely tell me if there is any treatment other than surgery for me please?
I would be grateful to you if you can help me with this. I have asked for my MRI report, I can even send it to you, but please I want to know if I will be able to continue my training etc.
Thanks a lot, Ashley
